Apple Breeding Objectives
The Plant & Food Research breeding team are specifically selecting for:
- Firm texture
- Good appearance
- Crispiness/Juiciness
- High brix
- Sweet flavours and/or good varietal flavour
- Durability and consistency of quality at harvest and post harvest
- Seasonality (particularly early-season cultivars)
- Disease and pest resistance, (e.g. scab, fireblight, powdery mildew/ apple aphid, leafroller)
