Apple Breeding Objectives

The Plant & Food Research breeding team are specifically selecting for:

  • Firm texture
  • Good appearance
  • Crispiness/Juiciness
  • High brix
  • Sweet flavours and/or good varietal flavour
  • Durability and consistency of quality at harvest and post harvest
  • Seasonality (particularly early-season cultivars)
  • Disease and pest resistance, (e.g. scab, fireblight, powdery mildew/ apple aphid, leafroller)
